Explore Pembrokeshire’s puffin paradise
Skomer Island sits just off the Pembrokeshire coast, less than a mile out to sea. It might be small, but it’s one of the best places in the UK to see puffins up close. Every year, thousands of them return here, turning the island into a busy little wildlife hub.
When to Visit
Puffins usually arrive in April and stick around until August.
If you want to see them at their busiest, aim for mid-June to mid-July. That’s when they’re most active, flying back and forth with food and popping in and out of their burrows.
It’s not just puffins either — you might also spot dolphins, seals, porpoises, and other seabirds while you’re there.

Getting to Skomer
From Broad Haven, it’s an easy drive to the main departure points.
By land (most popular option):
Head to Martin’s Haven and catch a short boat trip over to the island. The crossing only takes about 15 minutes, and once you’re there, you’re free to explore at your own pace.
By sea tour:
You can also take a wildlife boat trip from St Justinians, near St Davids. These don’t land on the island but give you great views of the cliffs and seabirds from the water.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Skomer is a protected wildlife area, so there are a few simple rules:
- Stick to the paths — it helps protect the burrows and wildlife
- Wear good shoes — the ground can be uneven
- Be ready for steps (there are quite a few from the landing point)
- Bring your own food — there’s no café on the island
- Dogs aren’t allowed
It’s all pretty straightforward, just come prepared and take your time.

Staying Nearby
One of the best parts about staying at Atlantic View Holidays is how close you are to it all. You can enjoy a relaxed morning by the sea, then head out for a puffin adventure without rushing.
Broad Haven itself is worth exploring too — a great beach, coastal walks, and easy access to some of Pembrokeshire’s best spots.
